The Context
In 2010, Blaenavon, a proud former mining town and UNESCO World Heritage Site where we established our Head Office, was searching for a new sense of community energy. The high street was quiet, and local families often travelled elsewhere for festive events.
As Chair of the Blaenavon Town Traders Association at the time, I wanted to bring people back together, to give the town something to be proud of and to show what collaboration could achieve.
The idea was simple: a two-day Christmas festival that would celebrate local businesses, create community spirit, and attract visitors from across South Wales and beyond.
The Challenge
There was no existing framework, budget, or events team. I was already working full time leading the business, so this had to be built from scratch, from fundraising and licensing to health and safety, entertainment, and volunteer coordination.
Blaenavon is a small town with very limited resources. To succeed, we’d need to unite local authorities, traders, sponsors, and residents around a shared purpose, to make Blaenavon sparkle again.
The Insight
The real opportunity wasn’t just in staging an event — it was in rebuilding confidence and raising the profile of this great valleys town.
If people could see their town centre come alive, even for one weekend, they might start believing in its potential again. That belief could ripple far beyond Christmas lights.
So we designed the event not just as entertainment, but as a symbol of local pride — a chance for Blaenavon and its high street to show the best of itself.
The Solution
Working with the support of the local authority and other stakeholders, we launched the Blaenavon Winter Wonderland, a two-day community festival combining local tradition, creativity, and a bit of Christmas magic.
I coordinated multiple partners and stakeholders to make it happen:
- Local authority: Secured event funding, road closures, marketing, and safety support.
- Sponsors & businesses: Raised financial contributions and in-kind support.
- Market traders: Recruited lots of stalls selling local crafts and produce.
- Entertainment: Organised a skating rink, real reindeer, live music, theatre performances, and festive lighting installations.
The event became a huge logistical operation, particularly at the time of year bearing in mind the town’s position on top of the Blorenge Mountain, but also a labour of love. Every evening and weekend went into planning, coordinating, and ensuring it ran smoothly.
The Outcome
At its peak, the Blaenavon Winter Wonderland drew over 5,000 visitors to the town, transforming the high street into a vibrant hub of community and celebration.
Shops and traders sold out of stock, local cafés and pubs were overflowing, and the event brought much-needed visibility and economic activity to the area.
But more than that, it reignited local pride. Residents, traders, and families saw what was possible when a community worked together.
From 2010 to 2014, the event became a fixture in the local calendar, growing in scale and sophistication each year. Sustainability plans and funding bids were put together, and the event was handed over to the local authority.
The Reflection / Value
This project reminded me that leadership isn’t always about titles, it’s about creating momentum when no one else has the time, budget, or a blueprint.
The experience taught me as much about stakeholder engagement, partnership, and communication as any boardroom project ever could.
Real leadership starts with a simple question: what can we make better, right here, right now?
