The Context
In 2011, Welsh health and wellbeing columnist Lynne Allbutt set herself an extraordinary goal, to become the first person to run across Wales barefoot.
Her mission wasn’t just about endurance; it was about self-belief, resilience, and mental health.
It needed visibility, funding, and storytelling, and it needed someone who could bring commercial structure to a deeply personal cause.
At the time, I was leading the business and already active in local community projects. I saw in Lynne’s idea something universal: the courage to do things differently and the need to prove that small beginnings can inspire big change.
The Challenge
Lynne’s story had huge heart but little infrastructure. She had no PR team, website, sponsorship base, or publishing support, just determination and a vision that deserved to be shared.
The challenge was to help turn a personal challenge into a national story, one that could attract sponsors, media attention, and ultimately a platform for her broader wellbeing message.
This meant balancing authenticity with professionalism, ensuring that her voice remained true while giving the project the reach it deserved.
The Insight
The key wasn’t to make it a “stunt.” It was to frame it as a story of courage, wellbeing, and leadership, one that would resonate far beyond running.
People connect with honesty and vulnerability far more than they do with spectacle. By grounding the project in its emotional truth, we could elevate it from an athletic challenge to a story of human resilience, and running barefoot is very hard, particularly across a country!
The Solution
I supported Lynne with a blend of strategic direction, marketing, creative development, and ultimately her autobiography publication:
- Digital promotion and PR: Helped build a campaign narrative, website, and engage supporters online via social media asking people to ‘Tweet their feet’.
- Time in kind: Secured creative support from our digital team to support their own professional development.
- Publishing support: Worked closely with Lynne on structuring and publishing her autobiography, Barefoot and Before, turning her journey into a lasting story of self-discovery.
- Brand collaboration: Advised on presentation, messaging, and alignment with wellbeing and community causes.
Our collaboration gave the project a clear identity and story arc, one that inspired national attention and left a legacy beyond the run itself.
The Outcome
Lynne successfully completed her barefoot run across Wales, capturing the imagination of audiences across the country.
Her journey received widespread media attention, celebrating her determination and raising awareness of personal wellbeing and resilience.
The publication of Barefoot and Before extended that impact, giving her message permanence and allowing her to reach an even wider audience.
The project proved what can happen when purpose meets planning, when passion is supported by clear strategy and creative partnership.
The Reflection / Value
This experience reaffirmed something I’ve always believed: leadership doesn’t always wear a suit.
Sometimes, it looks like backing someone with a vision and helping them find their voice. Supporting Lynne’s run reminded me that great strategy is as much about empathy and belief as it is about execution.
Real impact happens when you combine courage, creativity, and care.
